Today there are vast areas in Balochistan where few people live. In the vast plains of Kachhi district, no trees or bushes are found for miles. But thousands of years ago, this area was quite fertile. We come to know this by looking at the objects found at Mehar Garh.
A Clay Pot of Mehar Garh |
Mehar Garh is a small town situated at the end of the Bolan Pass. Like Mohenjodaro and Harappa, it is also situated on the bank of a river, Nari0Bolan in the plains of Kachhi which are spread upto the Indus Basin.
Some Years ago, a French expert visited Mehar Garh. There he found pieces of old pottery which were about his discovery. Next time he came back to Pakistan with a team of experts. He started digging at many places with the help of the people of the area. They succeeded in digging out some precious stones like emeralds and some objects made of lead and copper. Those stones and objects were 7000 years old. The precious stones were discovered along with human bones. It showed that the dead were buried along with their ornaments. Most of the ornaments discovered were made of blue coloured stone. A statue made of lead was also dug out from a grave.

Another important discovery was a copper statue which dated back to 6000 years B.C. These precious stones must have been brought from far away places. It shows that the people of Mehar Garh travelled far and wide 7000 years ago. They were traders. They carried goods of their own area on camels to other places, and brought things from other countries like Central Asia and China.
The discovery of statures and metal objects proves that people used fire even 7000 years ago. They not only cooked their food but also heated up the metals and formed them into shape.
