mirza ghalib

Powerd by: Shere Your Knowledge
Mirza Asadullah Beg Khan -- known to posterity as Ghalib, a `nom de plume' he adopted in the tradition of all classical Urdu poets, was born in the city of Agra, of parents with Turkish aristocratic ancestry, probably on December 27th, 1797. As to the precise date, Imtiyaz Ali Arshi has conjectured, on the basis of Ghalib's horoscope, that the poet might have been born a month later, in January 1798.
Both his father and uncle died while he was still young, and he spent a good part of his early boyhood with his mother's family. This, of course, began a psychology of ambivalences for him. On the one hand, he grew up relatively free of any oppressive dominance by adult, male-dominant figures. This, it seems to me, accounts for at least some of the independent spirit he showed from very early child- hood. On the other hand, this placed him in the humiliating situation of being socially and economically dependent on maternal grandparents, giving him, one can surmise, a sense that whatever worldly goods he received were a matter of charity and not legitimately his. His pre- occupation in later life with finding secure, legitimate, and comfortable means of livelihood can be perhaps at least partially understood in terms of this early uncertainty.

During his reign, a growing chasm has opened in Saudi Arabia between conservative Salafi (Wahhabi) forces and modernizers. The King himself seems to be relatively moderate, but he hasn't made many substantive reforms. In fact, Abdullah's tenure has included some atrocious human rights violations in Saudi Arabia.
Who is the king, and what does he believe?

Muhammad bin Qasim
Muhammad bin Qasim was orphaned as a child and thus the responsibility of his upbringing fell upon his mother. She supervised his religious instruction herself, and hired different teachers for his worldly education. It was the uncle, Hajjaj bin Yousaf, who taught him the art of governing and warfare.
Qasim was an intelligent and cultured young man who at the age of fifteen was considered by many to be one of his uncle’s greatest assets. As a show of faith in his nephew’s abilities, Hajjaj married his daughter to Qasim. At the age of sixteen, he was asked to serve under the great general, Qutayba bin Muslim. Under his command Muhammad bin Qasim displayed a talent for skilful fighting and military planning. Hajjaj’s complete trust in Qasim’s abilities as a general became even more apparent when he appointed the young man as the commander of the all-important invasion on Sindh, when he was only seventeen years old. Muhammad bin Qasim proved Hajjaj right when he, without many problems, managed to win all his military campaigns. He used both his mind and military skills in capturing places like Daibul, Raor, Uch and Multan. History does not boast of many other commanders who managed such a great victory at such a young age.

Abdul Sattar Edhi

Powered by: shere your knowledge
Abdul Sattar Edhi has spent his entire life in the service of humankind, without personal benefit or gain. He speaks out for the first time. Although he has buries over two hundred thousand unclaimed bodies in an era where altruism and selflessness are almost extinct, he looks back at his life with the humbleness that has become his most distinctive characteristic.
For the compilation of this work Tehmina Durrani transcribed over forty hours of taped recordings with Abdul Sattar Edhi.

A MIRROR TO THE BLIND realy elaborate the edhi`s personality in much more breif manner.
"I had accepted at the outset that charity was distorted and completely unrelated to its original concept. Reverting to the ideal was like diverting an ocean of wild waters. Another major obstacle in the promotion of welfare was exposed...the disgust of man towards mankind. There was only one expression, one reaction from everyone...cringing." Edhi Description:Edhi's most comprehensive and his only biography available took 2 years and over 40 hrs of taped recording to complete. Appropriately dedicated by Tehmina Durrani to the 'service of mankind', the contents here will move one and all. This is a wake-up call to our sensitivities- a call to address the plight and sufferings of the common man- at the same time, through Mr. Edhi's experience, one will be able to fully realize his/her potential. One man can certainly make a difference.
